A modern tryst with oral history of Telugu States ensued this week here as 105 storytellers from different walks of life lined up to narrate short stories with a contemporary touch to schoolchildren. In a seven-day Telugu Storytelling Festival that started on July 20, so far, 90 stories of different traditions including Burra Katha and Hari Katha have been narrated.

A mild tremor with a magnitude of 3.3 was experienced on July 22 in various parts of Salem district, triggering panic among people who rushed out of their homes. Kumbakonam became the first town in TN to acquire Bandicoot, a robotic system to try and do away with manual scavenging. A 70-year-old retired SI from Athikulam, in Madurai, has been taken in for questioning by the Thallakulam police on charges of sexually assaulting a 9-year-old. The Food Safety Dept authorities in Kerala seized a whopping 6000 kg of fish laced with the toxic chemical formalin in Vadakara. The incident came to light when the truck carrying the fish from Kannur to Kozhikode broke down near Vadakara. A fire at the District Armed Reserve headquarters has landed the Ballari police in an embarrassing situation, after a sub-inspector with its wireless wing was booked for “destroying public property and creating a nuisance”. A 19-year-old has been ordered to be hanged for raping a seven-month-old baby in Rajasthan this year. This is the first death sentence ordered by a court in Rajasthan after the tougher sexual abuse law was passed by the state assembly in March that allows the death penalty in rape of minors under 12 years of age.

At least 17 persons died in lightning strikes at different places in five districts of the State on Friday. While seven persons have been reported dead in Balasore and five in Mayurbhanj, one death each was reported from Khurda and Kendrapara districts due to lightning.
